* Malaekahana Beach House

Guest Rating:

Vacation rental house. Sleeps 13, 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms. No pets allowed.

Laie, HI 96730 United States

Malaekahana Beach House

Secluded oceanfront estate at stunning Malaekahana Bay. On this idelic spot you will go back to a time when life was slow and easy. Northeast trade winds and the occasional sunshine-laced rain showers in this lush tropical setting will instantly set you at ease. Located between the old sugar plantation town of Kahuku and the quaint village of Laie, these units are set beachfront down a private lane off the coastal island highway. This secluded beach-front acre is tucked between a classic ironwood grove and a lawn which stretches down toward a sandy swimming beach.

In the larger, two-story, cottage, the first level contains a living-room, bathroom, kitchen and bedroom adjoining a large outdoor living area and lanai. Upstairs is a spacious master bedroom (king-size bed and twin size daybed) with a large, airy bathroom and a lanai facing the sunrise. The large second bedroom contains two twin beds, one sofa and a flat screen television.

The smaller, neighboring cottage is laid out with a small bedroom (queen-size bed), kitchen and bathroom, and an exceptionally large living area with two "pu'nees" (queen-size sleeping beds), the entire front opening up onto the lawn and the sea.

There is a 40" flat screen TV, DVD player and iPod docking station in each house.

Malaekahana Bay has a long white-sand beach, which makes it perfect for beach walks, ball games and relaxation. It offers good bodyboarding and surfing opportunities. Located just offshore on the southern end of the bay is the small Mokuauia Island, also known as Goat Island. If you are eager to explore it and want to be on a secluded island all by yourself, you can swim over, take a body- or surfboard with you or when it’s low tide, simply walk over because the water is flat enough. Just put some reef shoes on to prevent cuts on your feet. Goat Island is a real hidden paradise. It has a white, sandy beach and green sea turtles can be spotted in the area

For those who decide to explore beyond their private piece of paradise, just down the road is the Polynesian Cultural Center, an interactive park which seeks to offer guests a deeper understanding of Hawaii and its unique history through on its 42 acre park complete with waterways and a lagoon, art exhibits, crafts and sports exhibition areas, island dancing, mat weaving and coconut husking lessons.

Our stay at the Malaekahana house was amazing the houses were clean, stocked with a lot of amenities that other homes that ive stayed in didn't have. The big property was perfect for us with 3 families and lots of kids. The location was very close to a shopping center with a grocery store and restaurants. I would highly recommended this place to anyone and would definitely stay there again.

We stayed at Malaekahana Feb/March 2017. We loved the location! About an hour from the airport, the area was residential "low key" and very private. Close by were food trucks, an adequate grocery store and a few restaurants. The Polynesian Cultural Center, where we attended a Luau and a show, and more populated surfing beaches were a few miles in either direction.
The grounds of Malekahana were amazing w/large front and back yards that were beautifully maintained. The beach was steps away. You could walk for miles and the water was calm enough for swimming (lots of garbage washes up along the shore though). The home and cottage were clean and in relatively good condition for a beach house. Rooms were very spacious and beds were comfortable. There were plenty of towels as well as two washer and dryers. We had a few maintenance, electrical/gas issues in the cottage but friendly Management Staff were very willing to amend the issues. The views from the main house Master bedroom and the Cottage were spectacular, although plan to rise early due to the light coming thru the wall of windows! Lots of roosters, chickens, cats, geckos and even a mongoose grace the property but that added to the unique Hawaiian atmosphere for us. I would recommend this property and the staff of Hawaiian Beach Homes were great to work with!

We loved every bit of this house. Our family is from Hawaii and this was a perfect get away from the city. Quiet, spacious, and beach just a few steps away. The only problem we experienced was the kitchens in both houses kept losing power. We loved that we never had to go pick up or drop off keys. The cleaning staff were very friendly. We will definitely rent this home again!

The Malaekahana Beach House was perfect for our large extended family of 11.The excitement on the kids' faces was priceless when they saw the house. The house was very clean and had everything we needed (games, beach toys, cookware, 2 washers & dryers, comfortable beds and couches). The smaller cottage was a bonus for the elders.I loved how the door panels fully retracted to bring the outdoors in.Waking up to the ocean view from the master bedroom was the perfect way to start the day.The path to the private beach were steps from the beautiful garden. The food trucks and grocery stores were conveniently close.I am so happy we decided to rent a beach house in North Shore instead of staying at a busy over-crowded resort in Waikiki or Honolulu. We visited many tourist sites, but we always couldn't wait to go back to the beach house. The Hawaii Beach Homes team was very attentive and always made sure that our needs were met.We are already planning our next trip to Hawaii and we will definitely stay at the Malaekahana Beach House.

Although there are some maintenance issues as far as size location and grounds we would stay again in a heart beat. Our daughter and son in law stayed in cottage with 3 young children and we had 6 adults with ample room. We had several from a wedding group come over and this unit was selected tops over all. Thank you for amazing memories.

We had the most relaxing, peaceful week possibly ever staying Malaekahana Beach House. The property is residential, but feels both secluded and safe. If you are looking for upscale perfection this might not be the place for you, it is a home. Not a hotel. You will find friendly little geckos throughout the house, so if this is a problem for you, you should look elsewhere, but we loved them. We slept beautifully with the doors open, to the sound of the surf and ocean the breeze cooling us. It is the perfect place for a large family or group. If I had a suggestion it would be for an updated BBQ. However, it does appear that the property is being updated on a regular basis. The cottage and the master bedroom have newer sliding doors, the main house family room slider are wooden and do stick some. Still this property is my favorite VRBO I have stayed in, and I am a regular VRBO vacationer. If this property should ever come up for sale we would certainly consider purchasing it. That is how much we loved it!!

Unfortunately, the cottage and main house were not as clean as hoped upon arrival. Floors were dirty (did not appear they had been swept in some time) and the cottage had a Carpenter Ant infestation (originally thought termites). The guest for the cottage was pretty much not used due to the insects, which was a disappointment. The management apologized for the inconvenience however the exterminator did not show up until the day to check out.

This is a great location for a quiet trip to paradise. It has great bedroom setup for extended families or groups of friends. Very quiet and peaceful. Easy to get into and out of with a nearby grocery store and not far from North Shore. If you're looking for high end accomafatiins, you might reconsider, as this does have grass growing inside the main house and small lizards in the guest cottage, but if you're looking for quiet and relaxation, this is a great value. I did notify management of two broken fans upon arrival and they sent maintenance out immediately. I would definitely stay again.

Beautiful grounds and direct ocean access but houses - main and cottage - were very worn and in need of many repairs. However, if you can get past that, then location is very convenient to many attractions and access to near private beach is wonderful. Also, property was not that clean when we arrived and cleaning staff did and seems to always exceed 3:00pm checking time.

    • Manager Responded on 1/7/2016

The home is an older style Hawaiian Home that is in good condition, just not brand new. We had guest check out the morning of their arrival and the home was a bigger mess than normal and the cleaners are usually done by 3pm but in the contract we do state that they have until 6 to get the home in order. We did our best to address her complaints but items such as rust are just a part of life in a beachfront home and while we are constantly replacing fixtures in homes, rust is not a major factor for replacements. This was one of the best vacations I've ever had! The house was beautiful with a gorgeous backyard and everything was clean and perfect when we arrived. I came with a few girlfriends, but would bring back my husband and children for a family vacation next time. The area is non-touristy, which gave us a true sense of what it is like to be a local on the North Shore. I give this property and my experience an A+!

the house was nice, property was well maintained. I didn't realize the house was on the windy side of island. very windy. the house had a lot of room for our family and elderly mother. the only problem was flies huge issue, I realize the farm across street might have something to do with it .We had to buy fly strips and still had problems. but overall good stay. Beautiful beach with very few people.

My husband and I, our two sons, and their respective partners enjoyed the beach house. We had a relaxing week of sight seeing, beach walks, and reviewing botanical knowledge. The house was nice and clean, very spacious, comfortable and nicely decorated. It gave us a calm feeling of openness so we had both togetherness and our own space. The kitchen was just big enough and outfitted to prepare our meals, and had bathrooms for all. But my favourite part of the house was the outdoor shower! We would suggest this beach house to friends and relatives.

We arrived on Oct 12, 2014 to find a nice home to enjoy for the week. We did have a couple of issues. The stairs are very slippery even when they are dry. My father-in-law uses a cane and mentioned 2 days in that he is having to be very careful since his cane was slipping. On the morning we left I slipped on the landing and ended up in the railing. The stairs were slippery from all the rain from tropical storm Ana. There needs to be some kind grips on the steps or in the paint. This could have been much worse. Also the kitchen appliances (no light in the refrigerator, stove knobs need to be workable) really need to be updated along with blender.

    • Manager Responded on 12/15/2014

Aloha Tina, Thank you for sharing your review about Malaekahana Beach House. During this time of year the weather conditions are unpredictable we are sorry to hear that your father-in-law was having trouble at the beach house with his cane. Rain can make unfamiliar ground slippery and hard to walk on, especially with wind. There are light bulbs on sight for both the cottage as well as the main house. If the cleaners might have looked passed this we would have been more than happy to have some dropped of along with a new blender. We do get several wonderful reviews for this home especially highlighting the view, location, & space this home has to offer. In the email we send out to our guests stating "how is everything going" we take this opportunity to check in and make sure everything is up to our guests standards. In this case the guest did not make an effort to contact us via email or telephone with any of these concerns. Mahalo, Hawaii Beach Homes

The house was amazing. Couldn't be more beautifully situated--very private, tropical front & backyard--which opens right onto a private beach. Loved having a dryer for towels (they provided plenty of bath & beach towels). Every room in the house is large, including bathrooms. Quiet area, away from the busy tourist areas, but close enough to drive easily to the north shore, and it's only a mile from the zipline, which was a blast! The ONLY complaints would be lack of A/C (most days were fine, and no A/C is common unless you're at a resort) and the early morning roosters that are common in the country areas--we used foam ear plugs which worked well.

My wife and I planned to have our wedding ceremony in Honolulu so we needed a place to stay, for my family and the in-laws. We could have considered a renowned hotel in Waikiki, but we thought it would be special for everyone to stay all together under one roof, instead of checking into separate rooms. The Malaekanana beach house was the perfect place for us. The property description was accurate, especially, the photos of the property. We had only imagined what this place would be like for at least two months, based on the photographs provided. It was exactly as depicted. The drive from Honolulu was approx. 1 hour and 10 minutes so it was a considerable amount of driving but the road was along the most beautiful Hawaiian shoreline which made it all pleasurable driving trip each time. The huge front and backyard, with the beach front.. we took a lot of beautiful family photos. The BBQ facility wasn't as clean as we expected but it didn't matter to us, since we had spent most evenings eating out. The property management was very helpful when we had questions to ask. No complaints whatsoever. Things which weren't specifically mentioned on the website; there are beach umbrellas and beach chairs which you can use at the beach; hair dryers are provided but couldn't find any electric irons.
Overall, we had the most fantastic time staying at this beautiful place and we would recommend it to anyone who is planning a holiday with a big family.^^

It exceeded our expectations and truly was the best vacation I have ever taken! House came with everything you could think of, had a pottery barn feel to it and was VERY comfy and cozy :) The main house has 3 large bedrooms, lots of closet space and seating areas with an upper deck off the master that has the most amazing view of the ocean :) We added the cottage on for a few days when more guests arrived and it was perfect! Everything about this property is great. I can't wait to book it again for our future family gatherings and vacations! Truly one of my top VRBO's! Pros: It is beach front. The drive way is on a private road and not on the main road so getting out is easy. The house is airy with huge beachside doors that open wide, with a screen. The house a great feel to it, very comfortable with vintage posters and pictures. The kitchen is big with the basics. The dining table was large. The beach was never crowded, maybe 10 people at the most. If you need a TV, it’s there. Wifi was good. Washer and drier. Lots of towels. Also an outdoor shower to get the sand off. The house is a little remote, Laie is near. No one complained about the beds either. No air conditioner is not a problem, there were always breezes. We spotted whales, turtles, and saw a seal on the beach. Hawaii Beach Homes were always very professional and helpful, checking in before and on day of arrival.
Cons: all minor in my opinion. They could use a new grill, worn but workable. And maybe adjust the security lights. The cats prowling at night would turn on the motion activated lights. Cell signal (ATT) is weak. Things that can not be changed. Roosters. It is part of the charm, go with it. It is Hawaii. One other item, birds roost in the bushes near the beach and there is a bird sanctuary near by. So at sometimes, there can be a smell. But it would not make me change my mind bout staying there.

We enjoyed the stay overall. You really need a car to enjoy travelling around the coast on day trips. We found the house it was in a good location as we went to different places to surf, bodyboard, swim, snorkel, golf and dine. There is not just one place that delivers everything. The property was clean in in pretty good shape and there were plenty of plates and cooking tools inside. The Hawaai Beach Homes crew were available and there if needed even though we didn't need them.

In summery the house itself is great but for the price that we paid there are a few things that impacted on our stay which would make it even better for future stays:

    - Not a big one but on the map on the Hawaii Beach Homes iPhone app was pointing to the wrong location on the map. We found the place purely by the street numbers but I would imagine it could be confusing for some people.

    - The internet was super slow intermittently. Not sure if this is just the North Shore but it was painful and super frustrating

    - There really needs to be an electric BBQ as it is just too much effort needing to start a Webber. After a long day out you just want to be able to quickly start the BBQ, cook and eat

    - The boogie boards were broken. We thought that there was going to be old surf boards / boogie boards and were a little disappointed at what was there to use

    - It would be good to know when the gardeners would be there so that one could arrange to have left for the day as it was crazy noisy and intrusive

    - Way too many wild cats with attitude around the house killing birds

Aloha Alister, We too agree that Malaekahana Bay provides a great location for traveling the coast. Sometimes the internet connection can be issues as salt air can take a number on connection issues. We always have trouble shooting techniques we are more than happy to pass along. It is essential that yard maintenance is kept up with to maintain the properties condition. Providing the best experience for our guests is important to us. We appreciate your time and review! We look forward to hosting you in the future. Mahalo, Hawaii Beach Homes

the property was right on the beach which enhanced the experience. the layout was good. Our only problems were no dishwasher, flys in the kitchen, roosters crowing in early am and maggots in the trash which hadn't been removed.

    • Manager Responded on 4/9/2014

Aloha Alexandra, Malaekahana is an elevated beachfront experience. This home provides a huge layout making it comfortable for many guests to enjoy the space without being stacked on one another. Sometimes small crumbs, trash, and weather conditions can bring out the bugs. We always stress to our guests that making frequent trash runs, wiping down high traffic areas (kitchen) can help reducing having or at least seeing these unwanted pests. We are very pleased to hear at least your overall experience went amazing at this lovely location. We look forward to your next trip to Oahu! Mahalo, Hawaii Beach Homes

Exclusion, privacy, convenience, spacious, cozy, relaxing & clean are a some of the words we would use to describe our experience at this property. The beach is right on the other side of the front yard and through the hedge giving you the secret garden effect when you walk through the hedge and say wow on either view! The agents at HBH were very helpful from beginning to end and were very responsive with what ever we needed! Thank you HBH, and Sarah especially! We will look forward to returning on our next trip to the North the way, close enough to everything the North Shore has to offer, but far enough away to have privacy and quietness when needed! We were just two people and if there was anything that was negative, it was that it needed more people to make the house fully functional! We'll be back with our whole family soon! R&T

Our large family of 14 ( two babies under 1) gathered at the Malaekahana Beach property for a birthday celebration. 10 members had come from the Mainland. The space was very comfortable for everyone and when we all gathered, the main living area was perfect and the long long table was able to accomodate all of us together. We loved having the beach practically to ourselves. The large grassy area provided the perfect spot for some wiffle
ball baseball games. The country setting allowed us to do some star gazing at night and
saw some shooting stars while seeing on the beach. We enjoyed many activities that the North Shore provides. The Surf Pro competition was going on at Sunset Beach. There was a kayak tour out of Turtle Bay Hotel.
We all loved the beautiful and easy hike back to Waimea Falls. We just enjoyed hanging out at the two beach houses. It was a memorable time for our family.

We have had a wonderful time at the beach house. The scenery and location was perfect. Unfortunatly the house was not very clean when we arrived. There was a lots of hen and chicken on the property, and they were making a lot of noice, especially at night and in the morning.

Aloha Ronny, We are pleased to know you had a wonderful time at the Malaekahana. We have spoken with our cleaners and apologize for this. Most guests are not bothered by the wild chickens and peacocks that roam the countryside and occasionally the property, part of the charm of the tropics. Mahalo for your review. Hawaii Beach Homes

We celebrated our 50th anniversary with our family from the Mainland. The house and cottage were comfortable and tastefully decorated with old Hawaiiana. We were right on the beautiful beach and lulled to sleep with crashing waves. The chickens and feral cats added country ambiance. The nearby farm stands provided papaya, mango, banana, lychee nuts, and fresh Kahuku corn. I've already recommended it to a friend.

We used this property for a group of 11 and had a wonderful time. It is a bit out of the way, but on the beach and very private. We didn't want to be stuck in separate hotel rooms and this house and cottage was perfect for the price. My only concern was the driveway. It was rutted out pretty badly and our rental van kept bottoming out going up and down the drive. Hawaii Beach Homes is a fantastic company and we will use them again for a future trip that is already in our minds. We absolutely LUVED Hawaii and are looking forward to going back very soon.

    • Manager Responded on 7/6/2013

Aloha John, The drive way isn't paved and is off the main road, it may have been that rain may have caused the some parts to be rutted out. We are glad the property worked out for your group and would love to have you back. Mahalo, Hawaii Beach Homes.

6 of us enjoyed a week stay using both cottages. The master bedroom on the 2nd floor with the ocean breeze blowing in and the sound of the surf gave my wife and I some of the best night's sleeps of our lives. The beach is beautiful. You can walk for miles and only see a handful of other people. We easily found all the necessary supplies in the 2 nearby communities. The beds are all comfortable. The cottages were both clean and well furnished (keeping in mind that this is a cottage and not a luxury home). The wild roosters were somewhat annoying crowing early in the morning and we missed not having a dishwasher in the kitchen. But all in all, we had a very nice stay and would recommend this location to others and would return ourselves.

Brought a family of 8 and reserved both the house and the cottage on the property. It was the best! Three of my 20 something boys stayed in the cottage and the rest of our family were in the house. The views were spectacular and although there are other properties around this one, we felt as though there were no other people around! All but one night we cooked in the kitchen and even though a large frying pan or griddle would have been nice, the ladies in the group enjoyed the kitchen access! We bought snorkeling gear and then found a lot of gear under the stairs and in the laundry area afterwards! (there was even sun block!) There are a lot of roosters in this part of the island, but they woke us up early and we got to enjoy the the whole day exploring the local shrimp trucks, beaches and markets. We did stop at Costco, but found the foodland less than a mile away was also reasonably priced. Spoke with property management a few days into our trip and they were fantastic to work with! If you are looking for the "beach house feel" you will find it here! There are barbecue grills on site to cook local seafood, lots of lounge chairs around. Just as pictured (or even better!) House has three bedrooms and cottage has one, but there are lots of places for larger groups to sleep. The beds are cozy and pillows comfortable! Also liked the fact that any food left behind would be donated to local food banks, not thrown away! Our gps brought us in from the south and we missed the driveway the first time by. It is in Leia across the street from the horse ranch (if you are coming from that way at night, this info may be helpful!)

Beautiful spot, had no idea the wind would never stop. That's the only complaint as the house and cabin were very nice and clean. The yard was great. We had little kids and the non stop wind made it impossible to enjoy the beach as much as we would have liked.

    • Manager Responded on 2/18/2013

Thank you for taking the time to review. We do experience winter on the islands, though in place of snow and ice we have wind and waves. This is more common in certain areas than in others. Prospective guests are welcome to call us to inquire about the beach conditions, which are dependent on the location of the home and the time of year you are visitng. Malaekahana is located in an area that can get windy during the winter season, though the 2012/early 2013 weather has been much more severe than usual.

We were celebrating our 60th birthday and decided to have our children join us. A couple of them came in from the mainland and the neighbor islands. What a wonderfully relaxing time we had. The house was exactly what we were looking for. Not a luxury house, but a real beach house. We had a total of 12 people so we used both the main house as well as the separate cottage. It was very roomy with a lot of space to stretch out. The beach is awesome and just a few steps away across an expansive yard. We felt so isolated while on the beach that it was like being on our very own island. The children were absolutely thrilled to see four peacocks that were roaming the property. We did have one problem with carpenter ants in one of the rooms, but that is something that can easily be remedied and we did bring it up with the property management company. Overall, it was just fantastic and we would highly recommend staying here.

Thanks for such a lovely review, Kapena. We now have the house sprayed for ants and such on a regular schedule. Mahalo, Hawaii Beach Homes
